Strobist Update

March 21, 2009

I’ve been busy this week, researching modifications to my Cactus wireless flash triggers from Gadget Infinity (eBay triggers or Poverty Wizards). This week I’ve managed to add a 3.5mm mono-jack to piggy back the PC Sync jack, to increase connection reliability (the PC jacks are a little loose and tend to fall out). This process was quite simple for me as I solder wires for a trade. A photo tutorial to follow soon.

Another mod that is popular is to replace the CR2 battery connection with a AAA battery pack. The tutorial I will write will be really no different to others on the web, but will contain valuable information for Australian Strobists on where to get certain items and the prices. In Australia we are not blessed with superstores like Wall Mart and Costco and our electronics suppliers usually look at you weird when you tell them what you are doing to your flash gear.

Also under development is an antenna modification to increase the default range from the measly 10 meters (30ft). Initial unofficial testing has resulted in a 5 fold range increase to 50m (150ft). I have no idea why I need that much range, but in case i do, it can do the job, without having to lay down the mega bucks to get a set of Pocket Wizards, Radio Poppers or Skyports. I’ll report on the official testing, with pictures to come.

Other DIY projects on the horizon are professional looking snoots, grid spots and beauty dishes.

Until next time…..

Let there be light!

March 16, 2009

HI all,

Just a weekly update to let you all know what is happening in the world of MV Photography. It’s been quite busy lately with some client bookings that I’m getting on top of.

The big news this week is that I have my flash equipment coming together. Strobist here I come. Its very exciting. This will add a whole another dimension to my photography. I can shoot more, and at what ever time as I can bring the light with me. I’ll start bringing some samples to the table soon, once I have all the bits and pieces together.

The kit consists of a Nikon SB-28 and SB-24 speedlights, two 2.2meter (7ft) stands, two shoot through umbrellas, three coloured gel kits, Lumiquest diffuser and two sets of Gadget Infinity wireless flash triggers (which I’ll be modding this week to get extra range and battery life out of them this week).

My series of articles on travel photography will continue (slowly) as I work hard to prepare for a big job at the end of the month.

Have a great week and don’t forget to click on the RSS feeds to subscribe.

See you later.
